VOLUNTEERS INITIATIVES
Sandwich Citizens Police Academy Volunteers: Shout-out!
Here is a an article that our Communications Director, Donna Leiss, sent to the Cape Cod Times:
It’s the season of giving, and here in Sandwich there is a dedicated group of volunteers who give freely of their time and energy, not just during the holidays but all year long. I’m referring to the Sandwich Citizens Police Academy Alumni volunteers (SCPAA), local residents who have graduated from the Sandwich Citizens Police Academy and gone on to become active community volunteers.
Using the knowledge and experience that they gained from the Academy, they support the Sandwich Police Department in a variety of ways. Academy instructors, including Lt. Michael Nurse, Lt. Joshua Bound, and Sgt. Bruce Lawrence, have schooled volunteers in radio communications, traffic control, and crowd control. In 2015, volunteers began the year by helping with the Emergency Shelter at Sandwich High School during Winter Storm Juno in January. Following that, volunteers stepped up to man the parade routes for the Memorial Day Parade and the July 4th Parade. They spent hours in front of the local Stop & Shops collecting food donations for the Police Department’s annual Stuff a Cruiser event, then helped Food Pantry staff unpack and shelve the many, many boxes of donations.
On Halloween, the Police Department organized a Trunk or Treat event at the Wing School, complete with tractor rides and crowds of costumed children; SCPAA volunteers kept traffic into and out of the parking lots moving smoothly. On Halloween night, volunteers patrolled downtown Sandwich, armed with flashlights to help people at street crossings. Same thing for the Thanksgiving Day Road Race and the Lighting of the Littlest Christmas Tree. Their next major effort will be First Night, during the New Year’s Eve festivities and parade in downtown Sandwich. Despite the cold and dark, volunteers are enthusiastic about supporting the community—and the Sandwich Police Department—in any way they can.
So, next time you are participating in a local Sandwich event that might involve a parade, or crowds, or traffic, look for the volunteers in their bright yellow reflective vests and tell them that you appreciate their efforts.

We always need volunteers to help at our events and welcome everyone's participation. It's an excellent way to meet fellow alumni as we work to support the Sandwich Police in their activities around town. You will have ample opportunity to help with traffic control, parades, and other town events in addition to our regular involvement in shelter drills and emergency support services. Regular e:mails will be sent out when help is needed, or you can e:mail SCPAA at: scpaainc@yahoo.com

If you are interested in joining the SCPAA Board of Directors in any capacity, you are welcome to attend our monthly meetings – usually the first Monday night of the month, at 6:00, at the Sandwich Police Station. Let one of the Board members know you are coming so we can meet you at the door!

SCPAA and the SANDWICH FOOD PANTRY

We know the SCPAA has assisted the Town of Sandwich in many ways, but you probably didn't know that our work has spread beyond the obvious. As a result of the "Stuff a Cruiser" event, there are now TEN SCPA Alumni who regularly assist at the Sandwich Food Pantry.
THANK YOU Roni Pierce, Bernie Ferioli, Gary Gronlund, Colleen Hayes, Sue and Jim Leavey, Alice and Bob Paul, and Nancy and Carl Rose!
SANDWICH YOUTH CITIZENS ACADEMY

The Sandwich Citizens Police Academy Alumni assist the Sandwich Police Department at the Youth Citizens Academy.
During the 10 week program, students are provided instruction in Introduction to Policing, Criminal Law, Court System, Barnstable County Jail, SWAT & Defensive Tactics, K9 Demo, a Mock Shoplifting, and Patrol Procedures. Each academy also includes a ride along and a team building field trip.
