Class 13-16 Week #11
Week #11: SPD specialty units - mountain bike unit, ATV unit, SWAT, crash reconstruction unit.
Ride-alongs: A student described her ride-along with Sgt. Cotter. During their patrol, they came upon an injured swan on Rt. 6A. Despite Sgt. Cotter’s valiant attempt to perform CPR on the swan, it did not survive its injuries.
Sgt. Chris McDermott, who is a member of the Cape Cod Regional Law Enforcement Council SWAT Team, in addition to his Sandwich PD duties, introduced Sgt. Mike Darnery, commander of the SWAT team. Several SWAT team members were also present, and they described the equipment that they use and the rigorous training that they undergo just to have an opportunity to interview for membership on the team. They brought their Bearcat with them, the armored vehicle that they use when responding to an incident. The team and their vehicle responded to the Marathon Bombing in Boston in 2013.
Lt. Josh Bound discussed the Mountain Bike, ATV, and Traffic Safety units; and Sgt. Lawrence reminded everybody that drivers are supposed to pull over and STOP for emergency vehicles or police vehicles flashing their blue lights.
Mike Miller, President of the Sandwich Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association, described the various activities that Alumni volunteers have been involved in over the past few years—parade duty, traffic duty, storm duty, Trick or Trunk, Stuff a Cruiser, and First Night, among others. He encouraged all of the students to become members of the Association. Donna Leiss, Contributing Editor
