Class 13-16 Week #10
Week #10: Chapter 90 (MV law) and patrol procedure
Sargent Lawrence started the evening by showing a video of him arresting Dr. Brown on Route 130 at a protest of citizens claiming that Dr. Brown was distributing drugs illegally. The arrest was filmed by Fox 25 and showed Dr. Brown approaching Mike Beaudet, the Fox 25 news reporter and Sargent Lawrence taking down Dr. Brown. It was very entertaining. Four students in the class had ride-alongs last week and talked about their experiences. One patrol car was needed at an under age drinking party and Sargent Lawrence explained that this is "the season" for such parties and how involved the situations can become once the parents arrive to take custody of their children. Lt. Bound explained how an officer can take the license of a person who could be considered an "immediate threat" to himself or others. Often, the driver is an elderly person who has become confused or lost and the family needs to be involved. Officer Gilrein tested the class on the details of Chapter 90 of the M.G.L. No one had a score of 100%. After a discussion on civil infractions and criminal motor vehicle offenses the class went outside to witness a staged motor vehicle stop. Sargent Lawrence, Lt. Bound, Officer Gilrein and Deputy Chief Nurse were joined by three more officers who volunteered their time that evening. SCPAAA Secretary, Colleen Hayes
