2015 SEMIANNUAL MEETING
On Thursday, October 22nd, the SCPA Alumni held its semiannual meeting at the Council on Aging. Pam Lungarini provided us with a delicious dinner of baked rigatoni with sausage, salad, and TWO desserts. We always eat well at our meetings, you should plan to attend the next one, which will be in March. Forty-four alumni attended, including 10 new members from the most recent Citizens Police Academy class.
After opening remarks from interim President Kevin Paice, Lt. Michael Nurse gave us information on some upcoming events that SCPAA volunteers will probably be involved in, including a Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving Day, a road race through Town Neck on December 31, the new sessions of the Junior Police Academy and the Citizens Police Academy, and the Trunk or Treat event at the Wing School on Halloween. Lt. Nurse also said that he’ll be arranging updated training on ICS (the Incident Command System), the use of radios, and traffic control. He thanked us profusely for volunteering to help with the filming of the Cape Cod Potato Chip commercial in Town Hall Square, and Kevin read a note from Christa Cabral, the School Resource Officer, thanking us for our help with directing traffic on the first day of school.
Sgt. Bruce Lawrence, the new Director of the Citizens Academy, assured us that volunteer activities will continue as usual under his direction, despite Chief Guillemette having left some pretty big boots to fill. Bruce will be ably assisted by Lt. Josh Bound and Lt. Jason Keene. Bruce informed us that there will be a new secure “substation” at Oak Crest Cove, where officers will be able to perform interviews and where residents can meet with officers without having to go to the police station downtown. At some point, SCPAA volunteers may be asked to staff the front desk there during the busy summer months.
Elections for new SCPAA officers will be coming up in March; if anybody is interested in becoming a member of the Board of Directors, step up then. In the meantime, keep up with SCPAA activities on our web site at SandwichCPAA.org and on Facebook.

2015 ANNUAL MEETING

The Sandwich Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association held its annual meeting April 27th at the Human Services building. After Chief Wack led us in the Pledge of Allegiance, we held a moment of silence in memory of Jim Fair and Diane Sylvia. Jim was elected President of the Alumni Association last year, but illness forced him to relinquish his duties to interim President Kevin Paice, and Jim died in March. Diane Sylvia was a long-time volunteer with SCPAA, and she died earlier this month.
Chief Wack and Lt. Guillemette presented commendations and gifts to several alumni in recognition of their efforts during First Night festivities, which took place on just about the coldest night of the year—recipients received The Order of the Ice Cube. Other volunteers were recognized for their work with the Sandwich Food Pantry, for photographing various volunteer activities, and for assisting with the Academy classes every week.
The current Board of Directors was unanimously reelected; Treasurer Ron Ayotte is actively seeking someone to “shadow” him for the next year to learn the Treasurer’s duties so that he can retire from the position. Any SCPAA members who are interested in learning about the Board’s activities and becoming more active in the organization are welcome to attend the Board’s monthly meetings, which take place on the first Monday of every month at the Police Station. The next meeting will be June 1st, at 6:30. SCPAA Editor, Donna Leiss

July 4th Parade

SCPAA volunteers were out in force this morning to help with the annual July 4th road race through town and the always entertaining parade. The 8:30 Start for the road race was at the Wing School; the route went up Water Street to Shawme Road, around Heritage Gardens, down Grove Street, through Town Hall Square, and back up Water Street, with the Finish Line behind the Wing School. Volunteers were assigned to all of the road crossings, and a large group was assigned to Town Hall Square to keep the runners on the right-hand side of the road and out of any oncoming traffic. The first runner came through the Square at about 8:45, with the last of the stragglers passing by at about 9:30. For the parade, volunteers were stationed all along the route, blocking off side streets to keep traffic from turning inadvertently onto the parade route. As usual, the parade was a huge hit with this year's very large crowd of spectators; the parade was led by an honor guard, followed by antique cars, antique farm equipment, an antique fire engine, many imaginative floats, a variety of marchers, and several of the town fire engines (the modern kind). Many thanks to the volunteers who spent their morning answering questions from the spectators and helping to keep traffic moving: Ron Ayotte, Matt Barbaro, Mike Brownell, Doug Dexter, Sue & Dennis Driscoll, Bernie Ferioli, Beth Friend, Gary Gronlund, Colleen Hayes, Phil Johnson, Andrew Jones, Donna & John Leiss, Ed Marcia, Mike Miller, Jeanne Nichols, Robert O'Connor, Kevin Paice, Roni Pierce, Nancy & Carl Rose, Sarah Triplett, Sue & John Vibberts.

VOLUNTEERING AT TOWN EVENTS
Dinner honoring LT/Chief Guillemette
A celebration of now-Chief David Guillemette’s service to the Town of Sandwich was held on Friday, September 26 at the Pilot House. Dave and his family arrived to cheers and applause, and Dave had to spend several minutes being greeted by well-wishers and shaking hands. Lt. Mike Nurse and Sgt. Bruce Lawrence got the festivities under way, beginning with a series of quizzes, Dave's favorite tactic during Citizens Police Academy classes. Little-known fact (to use one of Dave's catch phrases) about Dave (and the only negative one that Lt. Nurse could find in his personnel file) was the long-ago incident that occurred when he drove his cruiser into a parked school bus. Or so the story goes. Representative Randy Hunt presented Dave with a citation from the Massachusetts House of Representatives signed by Speaker DeLeo; Town Manager Bud Dunham gave Dave a gift that both Dave and his wife can enjoy--martini glasses made by glassblower Michael Magyar; and Chief Whearty, who was responsible for hiring Dave in the first place, presented Dave with an award on behalf of Chief Wack. The Police Association gave him a Smith and Wesson 45mm automatic in a beautiful presentation box, and the SCPAA gave him a framed collage made up of photos of all of the Citizens Police Academy classes. Dave thanked everybody, especially his family for having been so supportive during his career. He says he loves his new job, and we are glad. But we sure do miss him!!
